Different
Tuxedo Shirt Styles
There are three types of tuxedo shirts
available that are mass produced and affordable to everyone. First we
will explain the major differences in each shirt then the minor
differences.
Example
A: The Wing Collar Tuxedo Shirt
This style of shirt features a wing (or small
flap of material) joining where the top button and button hole of the
shirt meet. You may wear a bow tie, Windsor tie, euro tie or button
cover for a neck accessory.
Example B: The Laydown or Pinpoint Collar
Tuxedo Shirt
The laydown style features a traditional dress shirt style collar.
Accessories for the laydown collar tuxedo shirt include, bow ties and
Windsor ties. Euro ties may never be worn with a laydown collar tuxedo
shirt due to the structure of the euro tie (The top point of the euro
tie will push the laydown collar outward and leave a gap between the
collar finishing and the chest). Button covers are optional but not
advised.
Example C: The Banded Collar
Tuxedo Shirt
The banded collar tuxedo shirt
features a band of material as a finish for the collar of the shirt. The
button cover is the one and only neck accessory that may be worn with
the banded collar tuxedo shirt.
Tuxedo Shirt Details
All tuxedo shirts have
variations to consider. For starters the front of each shirt can feature
either a pleated front, plain front/non pleated or pique front.
A pleated tuxedo shirt can be identified by the vertical pleats of
material on the shirt front while a pique tuxedo shirt looks similar to
a paper towel type pattern. Respectively a plain front or non pleated
tuxedo shirt has a plain front or nothing on the front.
French Cuffs or Barrel Cuffs
French cuffs feature an
additional portion of material at the cuff (wrist area) of the tuxedo
shirt that when folded up and back doubles the thickness of the shirt
cuff. A cufflink is then inserted into the additional button holes in
replacement of buttons.
Barrel
cuff tuxedo shirts feature an easy for everyone style. The barrel cuff
is the same as any non French cuff dress shirt with the addition of
button holes that will allow the use of cufflinks or the included
buttons.
Stud
Holes on Tuxedo Shirts
All tuxedo shirts and formal
shirts have what look like button holes right above or below the shirts
front buttons. These are indeed
button holes. To be more specific they are button/stud holes. These are
in addition to the button holes normally found on any button down shirt.
This article relates to: Tuxedo shirts, wing collar tuxedo shirts,
laydown collar tuxedo shirts and banded collar tuxedo shirts which are
mass produced. Custom tuxedo shirts are available but are beyond the
scope of this article.
Tuxedo Shirt Colors
Tuxedo shirts are available in white, black,
red, ivory, off white and many other colors. White tuxedo shirts, ivory
or off white tuxedo shirts, black tuxedo shirts and red tuxedo shirts
